UltraTech Cement has achieved a major decarbonisation milestone at its Kukurdih Cement Works in Chhattisgarh, which has been meeting 100% of its monthly electricity requirement through green energy since April 2026. The integrated unit is the company’s first to achieve this level of green energy utilisation. Commissioned in 2024, Kukurdih Cement Works has an installed grey cement capacity of 3.3 million tonnes per annum (MTPA). The plant meets its complete electricity requirement through a combination of renewable power sourcing and Waste Heat Recovery Systems (WHRS). The combination enables the facility to increase its use of cleaner energy while maintaining operational reliability. UltraTech’s green energy adoption extends beyond the Kukurdih facility. Since April 2026, nearly one-third of the company’s 76 manufacturing units in India have maintained green energy utilisation of more than 50% of their electricity requirements. As of Q1 FY27, UltraTech had 1,897 MW of captive green energy capacity. This includes 1,463 MW of renewable energy capacity from solar, wind and hybrid sources, along with 434 MW of WHRS capacity. UltraTech has set targets to further increase the share of green power in its overall electricity mix. Under its RE100 commitment, the company aims to reach 85% green power by 2030 and 100% by 2050.Kukurdih Plant Meets Full Power Demand Through Green Energy
Green Energy Use Expands Across UltraTech’s Plants
Five manufacturing units, including Kukurdih, have crossed 95% green energy utilisation. The company is also progressively deploying Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) across its manufacturing network to support greater integration of renewable power.UltraTech’s Captive Green Energy Capacity
As part of its decarbonisation strategy, the company has not invested in new captive thermal power capacity for greenfield projects or brownfield expansions at its integrated units for more than a decade.RE100 Targets
The Kukurdih milestone represents part of the company’s broader effort to increase renewable energy use, expand waste heat recovery and reduce dependence on conventional power sources across its manufacturing operations.
Conclusion
UltraTech Cement’s Kukurdih Cement Works has become its first integrated manufacturing unit to meet its complete monthly electricity requirement through green energy. With renewable power, WHRS and planned BESS deployment, the company is expanding its green energy capacity as it works towards its longer-term RE100 targets.
