Havells India is witnessing a significant shift in the consumer appliance industry, with artificial intelligence (AI), software, connectivity and data increasingly becoming integral to products such as air conditioners, refrigerators and other home appliances.
Dipesh Shah, Executive President and CTO of Havells India, said in an interaction with News18 that the traditional boundaries between hardware, software, connectivity, data and AI are gradually disappearing. According to Shah, this transformation could fundamentally change the way home appliances are designed, developed and used.
Modern appliances are moving beyond their conventional role as standalone hardware products. Increasingly, they are being developed as integrated systems that combine physical components with embedded software, internet connectivity, data and intelligent features.
This evolution is also expected to influence how consumer durable companies develop their products. As appliances become more connected and software-driven, manufacturers may need closer collaboration between hardware engineers, software developers, data specialists and AI teams.
For consumers, the shift could eventually mean smarter and more personalised appliances. Air conditioners and refrigerators, for instance, could use data and connected technologies to improve performance, optimise energy consumption and offer more intelligent functions.
The development signals a broader transformation in the home appliance market, where smart technology and AI are expected to become increasingly important alongside traditional hardware innovation. As connectivity becomes more common, future appliances could increasingly resemble smartphones in terms of their software capabilities, data usage and ability to receive technology-driven upgrades.
